What Real Data From Real Rounds Tells Us About Women’s Golf

Women’s golf is growing faster than at any point in history. According to Golf Digest, women now make up a record 28% of golfers worldwide, and that number keeps rising. More women are picking up the game, joining clubs, and taking their games seriously.

But where can female golfers look to try and improve? What separates a 10-handicapper from a 20? Where are strokes being lost, and how can they be gained? To put it simply, women’s golf offers unique challenges and opportunities for improvement.

We decided to turn to our extensive female data to find out.

Women’s Golf Data: Straight to the Numbers

With one of the largest on-course golf datasets in the world, we analyzed data from 2,486 female Shot Scope users worldwide, who have collectively recorded 2.5 million shots across 26,312 rounds. The result is “Women’s Golf: By the Numbers”, our most comprehensive, data-driven look at the women’s game yet, fully updated with the latest stats and insights.

What we found challenges some long-held assumptions about the women’s game. Some of it is encouraging. Some of it is surprising. And some of it will make you rethink where you focus your practice time. In fact, women’s golf continues to evolve as more data emerges.

A Few Stats That Caught Our Eye

Tee Shots

There’s one stat in particular that stops most golfers in their tracks when they see it. Across every handicap level we studied, fairway accuracy sits between 56 and 60%, almost no difference between a scratch and a 30 handicapper. If you’ve ever thought that straighter was the key to scoring better, the data tells a very different story. Women’s golf certainly defies the usual expectations for accuracy and performance.

Approach Play

From 76-100 yards, the range most golfers consider their scoring zone, even scratch players are averaging over 42 feet from the pin. That’s not a misprint. The wedge game is significantly harder than the highlight reel suggests. For higher handicap players the number climbs to over 70 feet. The takeaway isn’t to be disheartened, it’s to set realistic expectations. Getting it on the green and in a manageable area is a success at almost any level, and it’s a practical lesson for anyone participating in women’s golf.

Short Game

From inside 20 yards, a scratch golfer gets up and down 55% of the time. For a 20-handicapper that drops to 26%. That means a scratch golfer is saving par more than twice as often from the same distance. But it also highlights a clear opportunity. The short game is one of the few areas of golf where focused practice can produce quick, tangible results regardless of ability level. Simplifying the shot, better club selection and picking the right landing zone will move the needle faster than getting caught up in technique. For those involved in women’s golf, this insight is particularly valuable.

Putting

On the greens, 3-6 foot range is where rounds are quietly won and lost. Scratch golfers hole 70% of putts from this distance. For a 20-handicapper it’s 48%, and for a 30-handicapper just 40%. Over the course of 18 holes, that difference compounds quickly. The encouraging part is that this range is almost entirely about routine and confidence rather than physical ability, which makes it one of the easiest areas of the game to improve with focused practice. Women’s golf shows the importance of mastering this range.

Real Women’s Golf Improvement Stories Using Data

The eBook also features case studies from three female Shot Scope users at very different stages of their golfing journeys, including a professional tour player who used Shot Scope data to make a significant equipment change mid-tournament, and a recreational golfer who recently broke 80 for the first time after five years in the game. These stories demonstrate the diversity of women’s golf experiences.

Their stories bring the data to life in a way that’s practical, relatable, and genuinely motivating. It’s clear that women’s golf inspires real improvement.
